Son pens book on breaking the cycle of familial abuse

“No one should suffer in silence, speak out and break the cycle of abuse.”

Pastor Norman Clark has penned a powerful book documenting the years of abuse he suffered at the hands of his father, breaking the cycle of abuse and starting the journey to reconciliation.

Clark is the first presenter of the Motor Industry Staff Association’s (MISA) webinar series, aimed at creating awareness for 16 Days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children, which runs from November 25 to December 10.

The book, I am my Father’s Child, centres around the theme of victims of abusive relationships’ innate belief that the abuser will change their ways.

“You alone have the power to break the cycle by deciding you are no longer prepared to be a victim. It is a decision you have to make. There is life after abuse,” said Clark.

To break the stigma that victims of abuse, particularly boys, often grow up to become abusers, Clark recounts his journey of self-awareness.

“I was 11 when a friend and I were caught shoplifting. When my dad got wind of it, I got such a severe beating that I was unconscious for two days. When I came to, my blood was still spattered against my bedroom walls.

“As a victim of abuse, you think it is normal. I grew up thinking all children were beaten like me.”

The abuse was known by all, yet no one ever intervened.

“Silence only further enables abuse,” Clark said.

“Victims of abuse cannot break the cycle alone. All you need to do is ask for help. You will be amazed how many people are willing to help once you reach out.”

Copies of this moving biography are available from MISA at R250 each.
