CPF TIP: Be aware of crime

Remain vigilant and alert says Benoni CPF.

ATM safety
The Benoni CPF once again urge residents and ATM users to remain vigilant when making withdrawals.

“It has been said often but we cannot emphasise it enough, never let strangers assist you while making a transaction,” said CPF spokesperson Stephan Lombard.

“Criminals who prey on customers are sly. They know exactly how to lure victims into their trap with the sole intention of gaining access to their Pin, cards and ultimately money.”

Lombard has the following ATM safety tips:
• When someone suddenly offers assistance immediately cancel the transaction and ensure that you retrieve your card from the machine.
If the ATM is located outside a banking institution, report suspicious looking persons to the branch immediately.

• Where possible, have a friend or family member accompany you to the ATM.

• ATM scams are on the rise with complainants often targeted at shopping malls.

• It is advised that ATM transactions are done within working hours.

Theft
The CPF has noted with concern an increase in ‘wall jumping’ in Northmead.

According to Lombard, these would-be criminals are most active at about 03:00, stealing wall-mounted security beams and easily accessible tools.

Theft of motor vehicles
Owners of Toyota Fortuners, Prados and Hilux bakkies are warned that an increase in the theft of these vehicles has been recorded.

Lombard said these vehicles appear to be in high demand by criminal syndicates.
