Man allegedly hacks 26-year-old man to death over house fire allegation

The 42-year-old suspect explained to the police why he killed the 26-year-old and further showed them the murder weapon.

A 42-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly hacking a 26-year-old man to death with a panga in Etwatwa East on December 28 after accusing him of setting his house on fire.

The suspect, who was on parole for another case, reportedly confronted the victim at the deceased’s friend’s home at around 13:00.

According to Etwatwa spokesperson Sergeant Barbara Ndaba, the suspect accused the victim of burning down his house some time ago before attacking him with a panga, inflicting fatal injuries.

“When the police arrived at the scene, there was mob justice. Members of a security company directed the police into the room where the body of the victim was covered with a blanket,” Ndaba said.

The suspect allegedly explained to police why he killed the man and showed them the murder weapon.

The deceased sustained wounds to his upper body.

The suspect was arrested and charged with murder. He appeared for the second time in the Daveyton Magistrate’s Court on January 9 and remains in custody.
