Swimmer to make waves in Italy
She is part of the Eastern Gauteng Aquatics Xcel Swimming squad selected for the Treviso Swim Cup.
Local swimmer Emily Higgins is itching to showcase her talent on a global stage when she will participate in the Treviso Swimming Cup in Italy in July.
The Hoërskool Hans Moore Grade Nine learner will fly the country’s flag as part of the Eastern Gauteng Aquatics Xcel Swimming squad to tour the Italian city.
The 14-year-old achieved the qualifying standard times in the 100m butterfly, 100m freestyle, 200m freestyle and 200m individual medley.
This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the swimmer. To help her perform at her best in Italy, she will compete in the Swimming SA junior national championships in Cape Town this April.

She will also take part in six days of elite training camps from June 25 to July 8.
“The journey to Italy is more than a competition. It is a stepping stone towards my dream of representing my country on the world stage. The exposure, training and international experience will give me the confidence to compete at higher levels,” she said.
Higgins, who has competed at the last two junior nationals, is looking forward to the competition but faces one last sprint that may cause her not to board the plane to Italy.

She needs help with funding to cover, among others, travel costs, accommodation entry and training camp fees.
“Every donation will make a difference in my journey. Even if you cannot contribute financially, sharing my BackaBuddy campaign with friends, family, or potential sponsors can help get me one step closer to Italy,” she said.
