Boy (11) drowns in water-filled illegal mining hole

The boy failed to get out, prompting his friends to seek help.

An 11-year-old boy died on March 2 after drowning in a water-filled hole that had been left open by illegal miners in Kingsway.

According to Gauteng police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo, the boy had been swimming with two friends in the hole, which was filled with water from the recent rainfall.

The boy failed to get out, prompting his friends to seek help.

“The matter was reported to the police divers, who responded swiftly and retrieved the body. The 11-year-old was certified dead by paramedics,” said Masondo.

Benoni SAPS is investigating an inquest docket.
