Web of lies lands ‘victim’ behind bars

“Opening false cases of crime, is against the law and waste valuable police resources.”

A 32-year-old man wanted in connection with a case of rape in Fochville was arrested in Benoni on April 22.

According to Captain Nomsa Sekele, spokesperson for the Benoni Police Station, the man recently opened a case of armed robbery at the police station.

“He alleged that he was robbed at gunpoint, further claiming that one of the suspects is known to him,” she said.

“Leading the investigation, Detective Sergeant Kabelo Langa found that the statement was false thus, making him guilty of perjury.”

Leaving no stone unturned, investigations revealed that the man identified as one of the perpetrators is the ‘victim’s’ former girlfriend’s brother.

“The man confirmed that he was working in Cape Town at the time of the alleged incident and could supply the officer with corroborating evidence,” said Sekele.

“Langa further found that the alleged victim is wanted in connection with a case of rape.”

The man was arrested and appeared in the Benoni Magistrate’s Court on April 23.

He was remanded in custody pending further investigation.
