Department announces NPO funding appeal process

All organisations are encouraged to follow this process if they have valid grounds for appeal.

The Gauteng Department of Social Development (GDSD) acknowledges the hard work and dedication of all the NPOs that submitted funding applications for the current 2025/26 cycle.

The GDSD recognises the vital role NPOs play in uplifting communities and supporting the most vulnerable members of society.

It understands that receiving an unsuccessful funding outcome can be disappointing and disheartening. So, in its commitment to fairness and transparency, the GDSD has an appeals process for NPOs who wish the department to reconsider their applications.

If your funding application was unsuccessful, you have the right to appeal. This process allows NPOs to present additional information or clarify existing submissions to support their case for funding reconsideration.

How to lodge an appeal:
• Receipt of regret letter
Through the relevant regional manager/directors, the GDSD will issue a formal regret letter outlining the outcome of your funding application.
Appeals submission deadline
If you wish to appeal the outcome, you must submit your appeal within seven working days of receiving the regret letter.

Where to send appeals
Email appeals to these officials:
•The office of the deputy director-general: social welfare services, Onkemetse.Kabasia@gauteng.gov.za;
• Thembeka Mkhwanazi, the secretariat of the Appeals Committee, Thembeka.Mkhwanazi@gauteng.gov.za;
• Lerato Bob, the acting director: partnerships and financing, Lerato.Bob@gauteng.gov.za.

Acknowledgement and review
The department will acknowledge receipt of your appeal when it receives it. Depending on the nature of the appeal, the committee might respond in writing or schedule a virtual or physical session for a formal review.

Outcome communication
The department will inform you of the Appeals Committee’s decision within five working days after it has met.

All organisations should use this process if they have valid grounds for appeal. The GDSD remains committed to a fair and inclusive funding process that upholds the principles of accountability and responsiveness.
