Rogers, Majetja raise BAC’s flag high
The club was well-represented at the MNS Attorneys Carnival City Marathon, with several runners podiuming in their events.
Sheree Rogers and Maphuti Majetja led the Boksburg Athletic Club (BAC) charge with exceptional performances at the inaugural MNS Attorneys Carnival City Marathon at the Carnival City Sports Grounds on Worker’s Day (May 1).
Rogers rounded up the podium with a well-run third place in the women’s marathon, while Majetja lost the men’s half-marathon by four seconds to finish second.
Marathon
Veteran Rogers clocked 03:41:19 at an average of 05:15min/km for the last podium position, finishing behind winner Alexandra Westner of the Benoni Northerns Athletics Club.

Westner clinched the title in 03:38:58, while Run Zone’s Petronella Khumalo was 02:08 off the pace after crossing the line in 03:41:05 for second place.
Rogers ran a disciplined race. She covered the first 13km in 01:07:55 at an average pace of 05:15min/km. She maintained the same pace to cover the next 21km in 01:49:59, arriving at 34km in 02:57:53.

The athlete then increased the pace to 05:15min/km to run the remaining 8km in 43:26 and ultimately completed the race in 03:41:19 for third place and the bragging rights in the veteran women’s category.
Wynand Strydom clinched the men’s masters category after crossing the line in 03:16:30, while BAC veteran runner Zacharia Mogotsi was the first grandmaster man across the line. He clocked 03:34:11.

Half-marathon
Majetja was outsprinted on the finishing straight by Qhubeka AC top runner Kabelo Mwahla, who clinched the title in 01:10:32, crossing the line four seconds ahead of the BAC athlete.
Desmond Makola of the Soul City Sports Club was third in 01:17:13.

Although Majetja had targeted finishing in 70 minutes to beat his PB of 01:10:05 clocked at the Mpileng Tshwane North Ultra 21km race on April 19, the Thembisa resident was chuffed with his performance.
“The race was fine. I enjoyed it. I have to work more on my speed because I lost in a sprint finish on the home straight,” he said.

Asked what was key to his runner-up place, he said, “It’s due to my long runs to add mileage and attending speed sessions every day, whether cold or not, to make sure I improve my performances.”
Next for Majetja is the CGA cross-country season, starting on May 3.
