Mercury Street receives much-needed TLC

The centre’s business owners and staff rolled up their sleeves to further serve the community.

Motorists making use of Mercury Street, Alphen Park, now have fewer potholes to worry about, thanks to a collaborative effort by business owners and staff at Alphen Park Centre.

Squeegees recently remained submerged in its buckets, as staff of Engen Alphen Park Motors, squared, cleared and filled a dozen craters that had formed on the road surface.

Under the watchful eye of Hanie Basson, owner of the service station, available staff members jumped into action.

“The potholes had become a hazard, threatening the safety of road users as well as customers,” said Stephen Williams of Alphen Biltong and Braai.

“We would watch in horror as vehicles swerved to avoid hitting the holes, almost resulting in accidents.”

Hamilton Mabelebebe, a petrol attendant said it was painful to watch vehicles getting damaged.

Hussin Ncbe, an employee of Engen Alphen Park Motors, was involved in filling gaping potholes on Mercury Street.

“Tannie Hanie had enough and got everyone involved in lending a hand,” he said.

“It was hard work but satisfying too. It is nice to see that clients can enter the centre and forecourt without having to manoeuvre around the potholes and we don’t have to jump every time we hear a thump or screeching tyres.”

Williams said it is refreshing to see a business community joining hands to serve the community beyond its welcome mats.
