LETTER: Homestead Dam, forever in my heart

“Home is a place where happy childhood memories live.”

Jelene Lecordeur, Cape Town, writes:
I grew up in Benoni, and Homestead Dam featured prominently in my formative years.

I remember taking walks along its banks, canoeing on its waters, fishing and enjoying braais in the park.

I recently stumbled across a photo I took there, in 2001, as part of a college photography course assignment.

This was before digital cameras.

I shot numerous photos, hoping that I captured that ‘winning shot.’

Heading into the dark room to develop the film and waiting patiently for the image to appear, like magic, on the paper had my heart aflutter.

What developed was a perfectly raw and unedited photo of one of my favourite places.

I hope that by sharing this photo, residents of Benoni will again fall in love with the beautiful city they call home.
May your positivity flow through its streets, thus preserving its rich history and beauty.

Although Table Mountain is now my beacon of home, Benoni will forever live in my heart.
