AfriForum tackles neglected streets
The organisation remains committed fill the service delivery void.
With the support of local business and residents, the AfriForum Benoni Branch has once again transformed cratered streets into smooth traveling roads.
In May, the community-driven organisation tackled two projects aimed at creating safer conditions for road users.
On May 18, the branch’s members took to Voortrekker and Atlas roads as well as Mercury and Finch streets, treating towering weeds which have grown unabated on middle islands, sidewalks and encroaching on the road surface, with herbicide.
“Following the treatment, our teams jumped into action, removing the dried overgrowth,” said branch chairperson Archie Mouyis.
“We hope that these efforts will contribute to creating safer conditions which will ultimately benefit pedestrians as well as other road users.”
While many Benoni residents enjoyed the warm comfort of their homes, AfriForum’s dedicated volunteers set their sights on repairing 25 potholes.

With D.O.T Towing and Recovery, PRS Angels lighting the way, the team descended on the intersection of Mowbray Avenue and Russel Street, repairing 17 gaping holes.
“This project was completed with the assistance of the The Murphy Cat Project (TMCP) who donated 50 bags of tar to the cause,” said Mouyis.
“A further eight potholes were also filled on the corner of Fifth Avenue and Great North Road, using 20 backs of tar, sponsored by our branch.
“The projects were quickly and effectively completed thanks to PD Nixon Containers, making a compactor available.”
Mouyis concluded by saying that these projects are once again a testament of what can be achieved if community-driven organisations, business and communities take hands, not only improve the city’s crumbling infrastructure but to contribute to the safety of all its residents.
“The CoE is failing its citizens. Now more than ever we need to stand united in our efforts to provide necessary services where needed.
