Vehicle theft still a major concern
Bakkies and SUV’s remain among high-risk vehicles.
The Benoni CPF has again raised the alarm on vehicle theft, identifying Benoni Northerns Sports Grounds as a hotspot.
According to CPF spokesperson Stephan Lombard, a total of 14 vehicles have been reported as stolen throughout Benoni since the beginning of May.
“During this period, five vehicles, high-end double cab bakkies and and a SUV, have been reported stolen from the sports grounds” he said.
“The vehicles may have been identified as potential targets before entering the facilities and criminals merely took advantage of the situation.”
Lombard cautioned that SUVs and bakkies manufactured by Ford, Toyota and Nissan remain highly sought after by criminal syndicates, across the country.
The executive committee of Benoni Northerns Sports Club confirmed that incidents of vehicle theft at its grounds has been brought to their attention.
“As the custodians of the municipal-owned facility we have, on countless occasions, engaged with the City of Ekurhuleni in an effort to upgrade security structures. These efforts have, however, gone unanswered,” read a statement issued by the committee.
“In an effort to ensure visitor safety, we foster strong relationships with local private security companies as well as the CPF and lean on their support during high volume events.
“We remain committed to ensuring sufficient security, within our means.”
