Four Daveyton men sentenced for rape and robbery

Four men from Daveyton were handed lengthy sentences by the Benoni Regional Court on August 18 for rape, attempted rape, and aggravated robbery.

The accused, Tsietsi Sekhobela, Noko Ngoepe, Tukufadzo Mahlangu, and Sifundo Nkosi, were convicted for their role in the attack of four girls in Putfontein in the early hours of February 14, 2022.

According to Ekurhuleni district SAPS spokesperson Captain Neldah Sekgobela, the victims were walking near Gumbi Grounds at around 01:00 when they were approached by six unknown men armed with knives and firearms.

“The suspects instructed the victims to lie on the ground and cover their faces. They then undressed the girls, took turns raping them, and robbed them of their belongings, including cellphones, sneakers, and clothing, before fleeing the scene,” Sekgobela said.

One of the perpetrators, Sekhobela, was known to the victims and was arrested within two days. The other three were later identified during an ID parade while in custody for another case with a similar modus operandi.

Sekhobela received 25 years each for two counts of rape, 10 years for attempted rape, and 10 years each for three counts of aggravated robbery.

Ngoepe received 22 years each for two counts of rape, 10 years for attempted rape, and 10 years each for three counts of aggravated robbery.

Mahlangu received 20 years each for two counts of rape, 10 years for attempted rape, and 10 years each for three counts of aggravated robbery.

Nkosi received 22 years each for two counts of rape, 10 years for attempted rape, and 10 years each for three counts of aggravated robbery.

All four were also declared unfit to possess firearms.

The case was investigated by Detective Constable Goenetsi Moraba of the Benoni Family Violence, Child Protection, and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS).
