Hermann’s ton not enough as Proteas succumb to New Zealand

He scored 186 off 153, which included 26 boundaries and three sixes.

Jordan Hermann’s unbeaten century proved futile as South Africa A fell to New Zealand A by the Duckworth-Lewis method in the third unofficial ODI at Willowmoore Park on September 3.

Despite South Africa having already sealed the series after winning the first two fixtures, the hosts looked on course for a clean sweep after Hermann struck 186 off 153 to set the Black Caps 349 to win.

Jordan Hermann scored 186 off 153.

Coming in at number three with South Africa on 13 for 1 after his brother, Rubin attempted to clear the in-field off seamer Ben Lister but only holed out to Adi Ashok at mid-on, Hermann repaired the innings with 159 for the second wicket with opener Rivaldo Moonsamy.

The left-hander scored his century off 102 balls, his fourth in list A cricket and his second on the trot after his 101 in the second match took SA over the line.

South Africa players celebrate after Tshepo Moreki dismissed Rhys Mariu in the first over.

Moonsamy contributed 73 off 88 before falling to Lister but Hermann continued his march. He was joined by Captain Marques Ackerman, who added a quick-fire 25 off 20, while keeper Sinethemba Qeshile scored 24 off 19 before Jayden Lennox dismissed him.

Hermann’s knock included 26 boundaries and three maximums, which drove the hosts to a healthy 348-5.
New Zealand’s chase got off to the worst possible start after opener Rhys Mariu was caught by keeper Qeshile off Tshepo Moreki with the third ball of the opening over, trying to clear the ring.

Dale Phillips watches his effort fly over point to the boundary.

But Dale Phillips and Joe Carter steadied the ship with a well-crafted 135-second-wicket stand, before Carter fell for 47 to Hermann in the 19th over.

Phillips dealt SA a major blow with his 147 off 109, stitched with 18 fours and five sixes, to lay a solid foundation for the big hitters in the middle to finish off the game. After falling to Andile Simelane in the 33rd over, Muhammed Abbas and Curtis Heaphy took New Zealand to the brink of victory with a gritty 45 for the fourth wicket.

South Africa opening batsman Rubin Hermann scored two centuries in the series.

Abbas scored a hard-fought 66 off 70 but was stumped by Qeshile off Hermann, while Heaphy ended unbeaten on 30 before bad weather halted play as New Zealand ultimately won by 18 runs via the DLS.

South Africa won the three-match series 2-1 with the Hermann siblings scoring two centuries each.
