CPF walks a mile in scholar’s shoes

“Having a pair of new school shoes has the potential of steering youths onto a journey of success.”

The arrival of the Benoni CPF Youth Desk was met with great excitement at Albertina Sisulu Primary School, Kingsway, on September 23, as learners curiously looked on while members carried a mystery box into a nearby classroom.

Since the beginning of June, Youth Desk members have been collecting new school shoes as part of their ongoing social outreach programmes.

Still coated in fresh polish with soles yet to make a dash around the playgrounds, 40 pairs of shoes were delivered to the school with 1 400 pupils.

“People do not realise what a huge impact a new pair of shoes can have on the lives of little ones,” said Zanele Masango, Youth Desk deputy chairperson.

“For many, this is the only pair of shoes in their cupboard. They are worn to church, become their companions when going to the shops, and serve as a shield against bullying.”

Identifying learners in dire need of new footwear, members of the CPF jumped into action, pairing learners with new shoes.

“Our pupils hail from poverty-stricken informal settlements, from households where survival takes precedence over comfort and mental health,” said deputy principal Pretty Mkhwanazi.

“Through this donation, some of our learners will be able to walk to school in comfort and face their educational journey with pride.”

Sacrificing their break, the school prefects took the time to thank the generous donors for choosing their school as a beneficiary.

“The care you have shown gives hope to children who may feel demotivated,” they said.

“These shoes symbolise care and love—something the children will remember for the rest of their lives.”

The Benoni CPF Youth Desk is endeavouring to assist more children in need by continuing the shoe drive.

Donations can be delivered to Sergeant Salmina Mosoane of the Social Crime Prevention Unit in room G03 at Benoni Police Station.
