Tee off to help teen fight rare cancer

Layton’s mother appeals for help as her 19-year-old is battling Stage 4 Ewing’s Sarcoma.

The family of 19-year-old Layton Deakin Geanokopoulos is calling on the community to rally behind them as they prepare to host a fundraiser golf day for Layton’s ongoing fight against Stage 4 metastatic Ewing’s Sarcoma, a rare and aggressive bone cancer.

The golf day will take place at 11:30 at the ERPM Golf Club in Boksburg on November 26. It aims to raise funds to cover Layton’s escalating medical expenses, which now exceed R60 000 a month.

Layton’s mother, Michele Lombard, says her son’s courage and determination continue to inspire everyone around him, even as the journey grows more difficult.

“Our son has been fighting this disease since he was 16 years old. He’s faced so much pain, so many setbacks, and yet refuses to give up. His strength keeps us going.”

Doctors first diagnosed Layton in August 2022 after discovering a 14cm tumour in his femur and others in his stomach, lungs and liver. He had 10 months of intensive chemotherapy at the Donald Gordon Hospital, followed by a 22-hour limb salvage surgery to remove and reconstruct his femur.

“He had to relearn to walk. It was an incredibly difficult time, but Layton showed a bravery beyond his years.”

After months of chemotherapy and radiation, the family received the good news in mid-2023 that Layton was cancer-free. But just six months later, it returned in his right lung. Another operation followed, and again, Layton fought his way back to recovery.

In January, the family’s worst fears came true when scans revealed five new tumours in both lungs. This time, surgery was no longer possible. Layton now takes oral chemotherapy tablets daily, which cost over R40 000 per month, excluding additional medical expenses.

“The treatment keeps him going, but it’s taken a huge toll on his body and on our finances. We’ve lost our home and car, but I’ll do anything to give my son the best possible care and a chance to live the life he deserves.”

Through the golf day, the family hopes to raise funds to help with Layton’s medical bills and let him experience some of his dreams.

The day will include green fees, supper and a prize-giving. The entry fees are R2 500 per four-ball or R1 000 for banner sponsorships.
