Rynfield Primary’s Kewley on the right track
He has represented the Valke U13 at both school and club level and will be part of the SA team to tour Italy after impressing at the Rhino Week in June and July.
Rynfield Primary School rugby sensation Clayton Kewley capped off a stellar season by earning the school’s highest sporting honour, the prestigious red blazer.
This was in recognition of his outstanding performances and leadership on the field.
Beaming with pride, the tighthead prop said the achievement is a major boost and a sign that he’s on the right track.
“I’m very proud. I would like to thank my coaches and parents for their relentless support and motivation. I couldn’t have achieved all I did by myself,” he said.
Despite some injuries that threatened the youngster’s season, he remained determined and committed to the cause because he knows age-group rugby is a critical step towards a professional career.
“I was kept motivated by knowing that this is only the start of my rugby career and that the U13 level is just one step to high school and senior level rugby.”

Kewley said he loves rugby because “it’s mean”. He started playing in Grade R at Rynfield Pre Primary and looks up to Springboks loosehead prop, Ox Nchè, who is known for his exceptional scrummaging strength, technique and cerebral approach.
“I love the scrum because it’s the only time we can put fear into our opponents, and if we break them, they are out for the whole game. Ox is reliable and breaks everyone in the scrum,” said Kewley.
Reflecting on his season, the front-rower highlighted making the Rhino Week team of the tournament as his standout moment.
“I made the semis of the Valke Schools League, which resulted in my selection for the provincial schools U13 team. I then went to the Rhino Week and was selected in the team that’s going on a tour to Italy. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. I have to make the most of it.
“I also had a good season with the Benoni Northerns Rugby Club’s U13s. I also made the Valke IPT team,” he said.
