Kickboxers rake in medals at championships

They collected 13 gold and five silver medals.

The United Martial Arts International (UMAI) Benoni Kickboxing Club president and chief instructor, shihan Aslam Mahomed, lauded his students after they collected 18 medals during the Battle of the East tournament at Brakpan Indoor Sports Centre on October 25.

The kickboxers grabbed 13 gold medals and five silver, with Liam van Wyk the biggest winner with five golds, while Amaan Osman claimed three.

Amy Langa won two golds, with Omar Patel, Evans Mburu and Salaamah Mahomed grabbing one gold each.
Husain Rahman and Muhammed Khan added two silvers each, while Tasneem Khan grabbed a single silver.

“We extend our heartfelt congratulations to all our athletes and wish them continued success. The dedication and hard work of our athletes truly shone through. Their outstanding performances are a testament to the rigorous training and sportsmanship they uphold,” said Mahomed.

The South African Kickboxing Association (SAKA) and World Association of Kickboxing Organisations (WAKO) Africa president also thanked his coaching team, which includes Matthew Gething, Kyle van der Merwe, Saahirah Katz and Salaamah.

“As we look ahead to 2026, we are confident that they will continue to excel as they prepare for the Ekurhuleni Championships early next year, followed by the Gauteng Championships and the National Championships in Oudtshoorn in April.”
