Daveyton Mall robbers get collective 37 years

Police are still searching for the third suspect.

The Benoni Regional Court recently sentenced two men for robbing the Jet store in the Daveyton Mall on March 16, 2024.
Valentine Quete Ndlovu was sentenced to 17 years, and Mncube Ronald Caphas to 20 years imprisonment.

Both were found guilty of business robbery and possession of suspected stolen property.

According to Daveyton SAPS spokesperson Constable Ntando Ngomane, the robbery took place at 13:30 after three men stormed into the store and held staff hostage.

“The suspects took an undisclosed amount of money from the tills and cellphones from the safe and display cabinets, estimated to be worth about R100 000. After that, they locked the staff in the store and fled,” said Ngomane.

Later that day, two suspects were traced to Alexandra after members of the Johannesburg Flying Squad received information from a cellphone tracking company regarding the stolen devices.

“The police approached the suspects, who were in a Toyota Corolla. When they searched the vehicle, they found two firearms under the back seat, one loaded with five live rounds and the other with eight. They also found empty cellphone boxes and a bag of cellphones,” Ngomane added.

The men were arrested for possession of stolen property and unlawful possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

They were detained at the Alexandra SAPS before being transferred to the Daveyton SAPS, where Detective Sergeant Johannes Maponyane took over the investigation.

Detective Sergeant Johannes Maponyane of Daveyton SAPS was praised for securing the lengthy sentences for two men who committed a business robbery at Daveyton Mall in March last year.

The court eventually found both men guilty, securing lengthy prison terms for their involvement in the robbery.
The police are still searching for the third suspect.
