Legend Junaid Hartley visits local club
“His words were truly inspiring and motivated our young players to continue working hard.
Former Wits University, Orlando Pirates and Ajax Cape Town star Junaid Hartley advised the SCBI FC youngsters to continue putting in the work, to believe in themselves, and to pursue their dreams on and off the field.
The 47-year-old attended the Actonville club’s open day last month.
“Our open day was made memorable by the presence of the legend Junaid Hartley. He generously spent time with our young players,” said club secretary Debbie Pillay.
“Junaid signed autographs for the boys, showcased some of his football skills, and most importantly, spoke to them about his personal journey – where he came from, the challenges he faced, and what it took to achieve his dreams.”
‘Magic Feet’, as Hartley was nicknamed, made his debut for Wits aged 16 in 1994 and was regarded as one of the most skilful players of his generation.
He had stints overseas with Vitoria Setubal in Portugal and Lens in France before coming back to SA to play for, among others, Pirates, Ajax and Moroka Swallows.
Harley made his debut for South Africa aged 19, but only went on to make five appearances for Bafana Bafana. He also played in the 1997 FIFA U20 World Cup, where he scored two goals against France in the group stages.

He last played for Malaysian side Sarawak FC in the 2006/07 season before his life was plagued by drug addiction for 12 years. He turned his life around and has since been using his story to motivate aspiring footballers.
“His words were truly inspiring, motivating our young players to continue working hard, believing in themselves, and reaching for their dreams both on and off the field.
“As a community-based, non-profit soccer club, moments like these are invaluable in uplifting and encouraging our youth,” Pillay added.
