Grade Three learner dies following wall collapse

An investigation into the incident is currently underway.

A Grade Three learner died, and five others were severely injured yesterday (March 26) when a wall collapsed at Lerutle Primary School in Daveyton.

According to Gauteng Department of Education’s (GDE) spokesperson Steve Mabona, a section of the wall on the school grounds collapsed on top of the learners during break time.

“Learners sustained severe injuries. Swift response from emergency personnel led to the children receiving medical attention on the scene before being transported to various medical facilities for further treatment.

“Tragically, a Grade Three learner later succumbed to his injuries.”

GDE MEC Matome Chiloane expressed his condolences.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the learner’s family, fellow learners, educators, and the entire school community as they mourn this devastating loss.”

“We will ensure the necessary support is provided, and the circumstances surrounding this incident are investigated.”

Psycho-social support teams were deployed to provide counselling and emotional support to affected learners, educators and bereaved families.

This is a developing story.
