EMPD crime blitz

Operations are set to continue in an effort to stamp out crime.

Concentrated operations conducted throughout Benoni by members of the EMPD Bronberg Precinct on June 26 led to the arrest of 18 men.

Kidnapping and assault

EMPD officers and detectives from the Daveyton SAPS successfully tracked and traced a 32-year-old man sought in connection with an incident of kidnapping and assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

According to the complainant, two men in a silver Toyota Corolla were following him as he was riding his bicycle, forced him off the road and caused him to fall.

“The suspects then allegedly forced the cyclist into their vehicle, demanding answers about where he got the bike,” said EMPD spokesperson chief superintendent Lieutenant Colonel Kelebogile Thepa.
“The men released the victim, but stole the bicycle.”

Contravention of the immigration act

EMPD Bronberg Precinct officers, together with Eastern Region precincts and units, the CoE Department of Energy, the EMPD Anti-Theft Cable Unit, the Department of Home Affairs, and the Department of Labour, conducted a strategic operation throughout Benoni.
The multi-disciplinary operation targeted supermarket compliance and the legality of business operations.

• Four Ethiopian tuckshop operators were arrested after it was found that they were in possession of fraudulent asylum documents and therefore in contravention of the Immigration Act.

• The Eastern Region Task Team arrested eight undocumented men and confiscated illegal mining equipment.

• In addition, the Energy Department disconnected several homes for tampering with meter boxes and non-payment.

Domestic violence

A 27-year-old man was arrested in Daveyton on charges of domestic violence by members of the EMPD Bronberg Precinct Officers and Daveyton SAPS detectives.

According to the complainant, she heard noises outside the home, which sounded like a break-in.

“She then noticed that it was her boyfriend and proceeded to unlock the door,” said Thepa.

“The suspect allegedly assaulted her, turning on his mother when she tried to intervene.”

Malicious damage to property

Two men, aged 38 and 41, were arrested in Daveyton following a report of malicious damage to property.

It is alleged that the resident of a house currently undergoing renovations received a call claiming the home had been vandalised.

Upon her return, the painter who had been contracted to work on the property alleged that her brother and a friend were responsible for the damage.

Wanted suspects

Two men, wanted in connection with separate crimes, were traced and arrested by members of the EMPD Bronberg Precinct and Daveyton SAPS detectives.

• Following reliable information, a man was arrested on charges of contravention of a protection order.

• A second suspect, wanted on charges of assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm and domestic violence, was also arrested.
