ACT Raptors soar to double cheerleading glory

“Winning the ICU African Cheerleading Champions is testament to the hard work and dedication of the athletes."

Benoni’s ACT Raptors have made their mark on the national and continental cheerleading stage, claiming two first-place finishes in a breakthrough season marked by triumph, resilience and remembrance.

The tertiary cheerleading team, established in January 2024 and led by the experienced trio of Amoné Kambouris, national team head coach Christopher Wilding, and national team all-girls team coach Stacey Hutchings, reached a major milestone in July when it competed at the national championships for the first time.

Taking on six teams from across South Africa, the Raptors rose to the occasion to secure first place before carrying that momentum into the ICU Africa Cup, where they again finished top against competition from across the continent.

The achievements reflect the team’s discipline, commitment and hard work since its formation.

“Winning the ICU African Cheerleading Champions is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the athletes and is a small step in establishing the club as a leading force for cheerleading on the continent,” said Kambouris.

“This achievement sets the groundwork to compete at World Cheerleading Championships in the future. We are proud of all our athletes and coaches and will continue to grow the sport of cheerleading in South Africa,” she added.

This season also brought another milestone when the athletes received their first-ever team uniforms, thanks to sponsorship from Benoni-based DUX Student Support.

The team’s successful season, however, came amid a deeply personal loss. One of its athletes, Kaytlyn Immelman, passed away in March, leaving teammates mourning a friend who meant much more to them than her contribution to the sport.

In her memory, the Raptors dedicated their season to her, drawing strength from their shared bond as they continued to compete.

Their two first-place finishes are therefore not only a testament to their sporting ability but also a tribute to the teammate whose memory remained close to their hearts throughout the season.

The ACT Raptors thanked DUX Student Support for believing in the team and helping its athletes take another step forward in their cheerleading journey.
