EMPD Blitz

Operations are set to continue in an effort to enforce by-law compliance as well as maintaining law and order.

Chickens confiscated from illegal traders

More than 40 live chickens were confiscated from illegal street traders in Chief Albert Luthuli on October 13.

EMPD Bronberg Precinct officers, in collaboration with inspectors from the Benoni SPCA, conducted a by-law enforcement operation targeting the illegal sale and slaughtering of chickens and other livestock in public spaces.

“Despite repeated warnings, these traders were found in contravention of municipal by-laws by conducting business on municipal land without permission,” said Millicent Kekana, media liaison officer and spokesperson for the EMPD.

“It was also found that the traders were slaughtering chickens on a public road in contravention of applicable animal control regulations.”

Traders were ordered to cease operations and the animals were transported to the Benoni SPCA for safekeeping.

The traders were referred to the Brakpan Economic Development Department to obtain the necessary permits in accordance with by-laws.

“We would like to remind the community that the sale of poultry is only allowed in designated areas and subject to the necessary authorisation. However, the slaughtering of animals on public property is strictly prohibited,” Kekana added.
