False case leads to arrest of awaiting trial suspect

The suspect is awaiting trial on numerous other charges

A man accused of house robbery, sexual assault and possession of a stolen vehicle has been arrested after reporting a case of hijacking.

According to Captain Nomsa Sekele, spokesperson for the Benoni SAPS, the suspect visited the Etwatwa police station claiming that he had been hijacked on the N12 highway.

“Investigations into the matter revealed that the vehicle in question had been impounded in Delmas, as it had been used in the commission of business and house robbery in the area.

“It was found that the alleged victim is awaiting trial on various other charges. He was arrested on November 17 and a charge of perjury has been brought against him.”

The suspect was scheduled to appear in the Delmas Magistrate’s Court on November 21.

Benoni SAPS station commander Brigadier Thabo Mphuthi commended officers for the swift investigation into the matter and for ensuring that the suspect is brought to book to face all the charges brought against him.

“We appeal to the community to refrain from opening false cases as it wastes precious resources that could have been better employed to prevent and investigate priority crimes,” said Mphuti.
