Police warn against possible spike in house robberies
Police ramp up patrols in affected areas

The Benoni SAPS has recorded four cases of house robbery in the past week.
According to Benoni Police Station’s spokesperson, Captain Nomsa Sekele, the incidents were reported in Rynsoord, Rynfield and Farrarmere.
“We suspect that the two incidents reported in Farrarmere may be linked as the suspects followed the same modus operandi and were armed with identical firearms,” she said.
“Further information received from the victims indicates that the suspects were not interested in stealing large household appliances but demanded cash, firearms and jewellery. Thankfully no one was injured during these altercations.”
She continued by saying that police are ramping up patrols.
“We urge residents to remain vigilant at all times, especially as we are entering the festive season,” she said.
“Criminals do not rest and may become even more brazen in their attempts to commit a crime.”
Sekele urges residents to bare the following in mind while spending more time at home during the holidays:
• Report any suspicious persons or vehicles to your local SAPS, CPF, community group or security company. Vigilance and information sharing are vital in preventing crimes and the ultimate capture of the suspects.
• Ensure that gates and access points are locked at all times.
• Should you be accosted in your home, remain calm and cooperate with the suspects’ instructions.
• Take the time to get to know your neighbours.
“A close-knit community will quickly notice when something is not right,” said Sekele.
• Regularly test your home’s security system.
• Do not keep a large amount of cash at home.
• Visit your local police station to conduct criminal record checks on anyone employed at your home.
