Ex-husband accused of setting house alight

Putfontein SAPS station commander, Lt Col Wellington Mathiane, described the incident as barbaric and selfish.

A 36-year-old man faces charges of arson and domestic violence after allegedly setting his ex-wife’s house (in Mayfield, Etwatwa) on fire during the festive season.

The woman told police that when she went to lock the gate, she noticed a suspicious man leaning against her wall, then realised it was her former husband.

According to Putfontein SAPS spokesperson, Sgt Raider Ubisi, the woman ran back to the house and locked the door, but somehow the ex-husband managed to gain access.

“The woman ran to the garage to hide, and the husband then allegedly poured petrol in the house and set it alight,” said Ubisi.

The ex-wife managed to reach her neighbour’s house for help. The husband fled the scene, but was later arrested.
