Local athletes shine on the track and field
The event was attended by over 1 000 athletes.
While all eyes may have been on the elite runners preparing for the World Cross Country Championships, Boksburg and Benoni middle-distance and field athletes held their events at the CGA track and field third league meeting at Germiston Stadium on February 4.
Kaitlyn Mackay from the Benoni High Athletic Club (BHAC) continued her form after claiming a bronze medal in the girls’ U16 1 500m, a few days after a second-place finish in the 5km at the Johnson Crane Marathon.
In the men’s U20 1 500m, the BHAC athlete, Matthew Mackay, endured a frustrating afternoon after finishing outside the top three. He finished fourth in 04:15:37, missing the podium for the first time this season.
Tobi Mosweu from Boksburg Athletic Club (BAC) claimed a silver medal in the women’s U18 100m hurdles, while Ofentse Mametsa from Benoni Northerns Athletic Club finished third in the men’s U20 400m.
On the field, Fabio de Klerk from the BAC pulled off a superb performance after throwing 58.59m in the men’s U20 javelin to clinch first place.
BHAC’s Owen Dalzell also had a stellar performance on the field, throwing 48.32m in the men’s U18 javelin to finish second.
BAC’s Seth Agliotti was in fine form after winning the boys’ U16 high jump, leaping 1.70 for the gold.
The men’s 5 000m was the most anticipated race of the day as it had the province’s best athletes competing. In the end, it was Maxime Chaumeton who finished first at 13:57:76.
Boxer and one of South Africa’s top athletes at the distance, Precious Mashele followed Chaumeton to the finish and Nicholas Seoposengwe rounded up the top three.
According to the CGA, over 1 000 athletes participated in the event.
“This league was supported by athletes from our sister provinces to test their performances and readiness for the national championships, scheduled for March,” said GM Mandla Radebe.
The fourth CGA track and field league event is on February 18 at Germiston Stadium.
