Another metro employee in hot water for misuse of vehicle
The EMPD and the Loss Control Unit clamp down on the misuse of council-owned property.
Internal investigations have been instituted against a fourth Ekurhuleni metro employee after the EMPD found he was using a council vehicle for private purposes.
According to Lieutenant Colonel Kelebogile Thepa, the EMPD spokesperson, the EMPD Security and Loss Control Unit was conducting routine duties on May 31 when they spotted a municipal-owned vehicle on Eagle Street, Modderbee, with a learner as a passenger.
“When officers approached the vehicle, the driver sped off, resulting in a brief chase,” said Thepa.
“The metro vehicle, allocated to the parks department, was successfully stopped. The driver explained that he was taking his child to school but assured officers it would be the last time.”
The vehicle was confiscated, and internal investigations are underway for the misuse of council property.
This is the fourth municipal vehicle seized in the past two weeks, with three confiscated outside a Benoni high school on May 23.
During that incident, a branded EMPD BMW, a branded Ford Ranger belonging to DEMS and an unmarked white Ford Ranger belonging to the parks department were confiscated after finding they were used for private purposes.
“The EMPD reiterates that those who use council resources meant to serve the public should refrain from misusing the vehicles,” said Thepa.
All four employees face internal disciplinary action.
