The Daveyton Heritage Society celebrated IsiNdebele, one of the 11 official languages, on Youth Day, June 16.

Proudly dressed in IsiNdebele attire, over 50 attendees attended the event held at Sibonelo Park in Daveyton.

The aim of the gathering was to encourage young people to embrace their roots and to learn the language in schools.

Francinah Mhlongo, Maria Mabhena, and Suzane Mahlangu.

Xolani Nkosi from Daveyton Heritage Society said they are happy that IsiNdebele was introduced in schools.

“Daveyton is very diverse, so we also wanted to showcase our diversity as Ndebele people. This was also our way of keeping youngsters from the streets and from drugs and crime.

“We want to engage more with the community to educate them about the Ndebele culture.

Ndebele men also attended the Daveyton Heritage Society event on June 16.

“IsiNdebele is more than a language, it is a lifestyle,” he said.

Nkosi applauded Belinda Mndebele for being the first IsiNdebele educator at Isiphethu Primary School.
