Northerns runners in top 10 at Old Eds race

Bright Mikolongwe, Kaitlyn Bubb and Alison de Bruin all finished in the top in the men and women's 21.1km.

Three Benoni Northerns Athletic Club (BNAC) top runners finished in the top 10 during the Discovery Vitality Series’ Old Eds Road Race at the Old Edwardian Society Sports Club in Houghton on August 13.

Despite the rust after a three-month break, Bright Mikologwe produced an incredible performance to finish fourth after clocking 01:14:43 in the men’s half-marathon, becoming the BNAC’s first runner at the finish line.

“The Old Eds vitality run series done and dusted. It was a tough route but I tried my best after three months without racing. We are back in action,” he said.

The race was won by Kenyan Jimnah Karinki who breasted the tape in 01:07:22. The winner of this year’s Johnson Crane men’s half-marathon, Lucky Mohale was second and Raphael Segodi from Rocky Road Runners claimed the third spot.

Kaitlyn Bubb was the first Northerns lady at the finish, crossing the line in a time of 01:36:45 in the women’s 21.1km. Her teammate, Alison de Bruin finished in ninth position in 01:37:17.

Christine Kalmer won the women’s race after cutting the tape in 01:26:06 for the gold medal. Lene Swart was second and Mavericks runner, Lexi Claasen rounded off the podium.
