Daveyton Special School gains R2m computer lab

The lab was officially handed over on March 6 as part of Vodacom's School of Excellence model.

The Vodacom Foundation’s R2m investment into a state-of-the-art computer lab is set to boost educational opportunities for learners of Usizolwethu Special School in Daveyton.

The lab was officially handed over on March 6 as part of Vodacom’s School of Excellence model, boasting equipment which will prepare learners with digital skills needed for the future.

Principal Morina Nombulelo Skosana stated that the lab is going to remove many challenges learners face by exposing them to technology and opportunities they never thought were within reach.

School therapist Zanele Sithole was excited to demonstrate and teach the learners how to effectively use the electronics in the lab.

“The lab will make my job easier.

The equipment engages the learners’ five senses, which target different areas in their brains, enhancing the way they will absorb information,” she said.

Learners also expressed their excitement at being given this opportunity and being recognised for such a donation.

“We believe that every child has a right to dream, learn and reach their potential, so we are happy to support them,” said Sitho Mdlalose, CEO of Vodacom South Africa.

As part of the donation, the communication giant established a vegetable garden to promote food sustainability.

Taki Netshitenzhe, director of external affairs for Vodacom South Africa, expressed her happiness in working within such an initiative.

“We are very pleased to be launching another School of Excellence. This partnership demonstrates the power of collaboration in creating a better, more inclusive and sustainable future as we are building pathways for young people to participate meaningfully in the digital economy,” she said.

Representatives of the Gauteng Department of Education, Ekurhuleni North District, will systematically check in with the school, ensuring that the newly established lab is being optimally used.

“This lab will enable the children to learn at a level where they can be recognised globally, putting our district on the map,” said GDE district director Makgena Makola.
