Beggar is a traffic light menace

Tom Smillie, Farrarmere, writes by email:

With regards to the “menace in a wheelchair” at the trafiic lights on the corner of Great North Road and Webb Street, nothing has changed since I and a few very supportive readers voiced their opinion a few weeks ago.

Last week , he was lying sprawled out in Cloudy Street, with cars having to go around him to avoid riding right over him.

Would I be allowed to lie there blind drunk? Doubt it.

To the lady and gent who picked him up yesterday (Sunday) and put him back in his wheelchair: well done.

However, I regret having to tell you kind folks , he fell out again not five minutes later, once again blocking the road at the traffic lights, in full view of all who have to stop there. Lovely sight .

I have also noticed that two “no begging” signs have been erected on the corner of Cloudy and Great North streets — on both corners.

Well done for wasting this money. I’m not sure why there are two on the same side, however nothing has been erected on the opposite side, where this most irritating person stands, lies, falls over.

He is arrogant, to the point where he now knocks on your window if you ignore his drunken plea for money to replace yet another quart of beer.

Should he knock on my window, the crutches will find a new spot, and it won’t be under his arms.

When, and if ever, is something going to be done?
