There has to be something in the water in Benoni.
Something clean and pure that will give the Ekurhuleni Metro’s Blue Drop Water Status a run for its money.
Something called drive.
Something called success.
Like most Benonians my chest swells with pride when one of our own sets the world ablaze.
Think about it…
Somewhere out there in the weird and wonderful world a Benonian is achieving their dreams.
Somewhere out there a young Benoni golfer is making his name on the greens and fairways of the world.
Somewhere out there a fireball Benoni businessperson is bringing much needed commerce and trade to our nation.
Yep, that’s right, Benoni’s people are achieving and have been doing so since Benoni was declared a town.
The opportunity to work in my hometown is something I have relished and, day by day, I feel awestruck by the dynamism, ingenuity and abilities of the people in my town.
The short time that I have spent on the sidelines of Benoni’s sports fields or in the newsroom gathering information about successful Benonians has unearthed a new found bounce within me, and my passion for the achievements of local men and women has grown tenfold.
There is no better feeling for me than seeing someone from my own backyard succeed and, whenever that particular person’s name is brought up in conversation or mentioned in the media, I like to make it known that the individual in question is a Benonian.
In fact, Benoni’s sportsmen and women are kicking so many buttocks on a weekly basis that I regularly struggle to fit all the achievements into your Benoni City Times.
We are a town founded on gold, so it is little wonder that our people are chasing and claiming gold in all spheres of life.
Let’s use the examples of people like Oliver Reginald Tambo, Charlize Theron or Frith van der Merwe to showcase to our children the unlimited potential that people from the exact same neighbourhood as us possess.
Let’s support, motivate and encourage each and every Benoni resident to go for gold in everything they do.
We Benonians endure a heck load of silly (sometimes funny) jokes from “outsiders” who don’t really know who we are and how we operate in this “little town” of ours… perhaps they will never know.
All I know, however, is that while others are pointing fingers and laughing like a sisterhood of cackling hyenas, true Benonians are out there taking care of business!
So, keep doing what you do Benoni!
South Africa needs you!
The world needs you!
