Golf ball dents car

Margaret Mudd of Rynfield writes: Beware of using Sarel Cillers Street in Rynfield.

On Saturday, February 21, whilst driving home from CR Swart Dam, a golf ball came over the wall, put a dent in the bonnet of my Caddy van, flew over the top of the van, and hopefully missed the grey car which was following me.

How it missed my windshield, and I wasn’t taken out, is a miracle.

I got in touch with Ebotse Links CEO, Peet de Wet, who informed me they do not accept any liability with regards to incidents or damage, caused by its residents or members while playing golf.

I believe as a golf club estate they should take responsible measures to ensure golf balls are kept within the boundary, and not fly onto the road, causing damage to vehicles or possible injury.

This public road is used by many walkers, runners, cyclists and vehicles.

It seems if your car is damaged, you’re maimed, or worse, killed, it is your own fault for being there.

I suggest Ebotse Links should improve the safety standards for all concerned, by enclosing the offending area with high netting, and take out a public liability policy, so the public, who have a right to use this road, may do so in safety and, should the matter arise, be compensated if damage has been done.

Could the golfer who was using the green on February 21, and saw his ball go over the wall between 9.30am and 9.40am, contact Peet de Wet, he has my number and email.

Editor’s note, Peet de Wet, CEO of Ebotse Links:

I hereby acknowledge your e-mail dated February 21 and would like to advise as follow:

Ebotse Links Golf Club, as well as the Ebotse Homeowners Association, cannot accept any liability with regards to incidents/damage caused by residents or members of the public while playing golf.

The matter should be taken up with the individual that caused the damage to your vehicle.

Unfortunately this could not be done in your case.

If the golfer could be identified, we would have been in a position to assist you with your claim for damages.
