I am horrified each morning when I drive to work, about the sheer number of children sitting in the front seat of cars and not wearing their seat belts.
In the couple of 100 metres on O’Reilly Merry Street, between Brodigan and Oak streets, there is a vast majority who are not using seat belts.
It’s not simply the older children either.
There are many pre-school children who stand on the front seat, or are transported sitting on a parent’s lap.
One morning, a mother was tenderly doing her pre-school daughter’s hair, while sitting with her on her lap in the front seat.
Doesn’t she realise that in a split second her daughter might not be around any more because of this negligence?
Another mother was smoking in the car with her toddler standing on the front seat.
If these parents are caught, perhaps they should be charged with child neglect rather than not wearing a seat belt.
That would indicate the seriousness of the situation
Surely these are loving parents, so why can’t they see the awful danger they are putting their children in?
If you had a very valuable vase to transport, you’d ensure it was strapped in carefully.
How much more precious is your child?
