LETTER: Thanks for the wonderful ‘maplotter’ memories

Your open honest editorial about being a Bartletts maplotter girl had me in tears of delight.

LETTER: Sad to see Homestead in this state

I am not sure which plot you lived on but it sounds as if it could have previously been either the Smith’s or the Smiley’s plot on one of the corners of Ridge and now Atlas Road.

As an old Bartletts maplotter growing up there 30 years before you, I was delighted to recall the school bus memories, the going to Benoni for fun memories.

I was a Martin School and Boksburg High boy and the Parkdene and Cinderella kids looked down on us maplotters, but the Benoni kids were tickled by them.

I have fond memories of going to the Lido, cricket at Willomoore Park, fishing in Middle and Kleinfontein dams, the annual mardi-gras down Princes Avenue, and the Christmas lights on the town hall which we could see from our home, special occasion dinners at the Criterion.

In summer we would hop on bicycles and go “goef” in the Benoni swimming pool as the scenery was better than Boksburg North or ERPM pools.

Thank you for the wonderful happy memories.

We still live in Boksburg where there used to be plots but my wife works in Benoni and we have been Northfield Methodist members from when you were still a girl.

It is sad to grow old in the towns you grew up in.

I was heartbroken last year to see the Benoni Hyperama that I worked hard on to help open standing empty and derelict, part of Peter Bachtis’ hellhole.

I wish you years of joy and soaring success editing your excellent newspaper.
