River race qualifiers 1 – River 0

Cooper looks to achieve A-Grade status.

Despite some cold temperatures on previous days, Sunday, July 7, was another of the mild, pleasant Gauteng winter days, as more than 100 paddlers tackled the rapids of the Klip River, from the Heidelberg Road bridge, near the R59 in Daleside, through Henley-on-Klip to the Danie Mclean Park, in Meyerton.

This is a distance of some 30km, with almost 20 obstacles, rapids, broken bridges, or rocky sections.

Liwalam Ntsiza partnered with Frith Cooper, both members of the Ekurhuleni Canoe Club, based at Homestead Dam, to help her gain the experience and skills she needs to manoeuvre through the many rapids.

Cooper needs six river races to qualify for A-Grade status and, with one down, she is already looking forward to the other five races, despite a number of swims in the icy water as Ntsiza had also not been on this river for some time and rivers change substantially from season to season.

The swims did not deter Cooper, nor dampen her enthusiasm; as an open water swimmer she found them quite exhilarating and is pleased to have the river experience on her CV.

They finished the long marathon race in three hours and 28 minutes.
