Paddlers test their mettle at Gauteng Marathon
KwaZulu-Natal paddler Wayne Wilson won the highly competitive K1 senior category, at the Ekurhuleni Kayak Club's (ERK) Gauteng Marathon, at Homestead Dam, on Saturday, May 10.
The sub-master paddler completed the five-lap 22km course, which included four portages, in a time of 1:46:51.29.
ERK’s top veteran paddler, Michael Stewart, finished the course in a time of 1:50:04.43.
A different race over a different distance was held for the u-8s, u-10s and u-12s, who use special boats called Guppy boats.
The K2 (doubles) race was held on Sunday, and Siseko Ntondini and Bradley Fisher won the senior category, ahead of ERK’s Stewart and Nicholas Weeks.
The Gauteng championships are trials that are held to select the Gauteng team who will represent the province at the South African Marathon Canoe Interprovincial Championships, which will take place at Homestead Dam, on Saturday, June 7 and Sunday, June 8.
