If you live in the vicinity of Benoni Northerns Sports Club you may hear the famous war cry, “Hockey is fun”, from every little voice in the Benoni Northerns Junior Hockey Club (BNJHC) echoing across the field, every Saturday morning, during the field hockey season.
This weekend more happy voices will be heard, when the club host their annual home tournament, on Saturday, July 26.
Last year’s home tournament hosted approximately 1 250 players, and larger numbers are expected this year.
Hockey fans in the area are invited to come on down and show their support for the youngsters (u-5 to u-13) on Saturday, with the first game starting promptly at 8am.
Food stalls will be available and all proceeds will go to the club and their development programmes for underprivileged children.
Not only do BNJC focus on their own players, but they have a strong focus on developing skills in previously disadvantaged communities.
They have several development players in their ranks, mostly from Wattville and in various age groups, who are receiving coaching by the club.
Through the generous donations from parents and players they have been able to provide uniforms, kit, sticks and balls for all of their development players.
The junior club further support a development team named “Silver Stars”, from Diepsloot, who are getting much needed support and exposure to the sport.
