Yearling National takes flight

Birds take off for classic race.

The Benoni Homing Society (BHS) basketed their birds on Thursday, August 7, for the first classic race of the season “The Yearling National”.

Only young birds were liberated from Colesberg, about 600km away.

The birds were due to be liberated on Saturday, August 9, but due to weather conditions they were only liberated on Sunday, August 10.

Both races went up at 7.15am and the first bird home in the young bird race was for VD Merwes Loft at 2.44.38pm at a velocity of 1,173.065mpm, ahead of the next bird by three minutes and 27 seconds.

The first bird home in the Yearling National was for TNT Lofts clocking in at 2.44.09pm at a velocity of 1,173.577mpm, ahead of the next bird by four minutes and 24 seconds.

  • Young bird results: 1 VD Merwes 1,173.065mpm, 2 Frik and Colyn Nel 1,165.150mpm, 3 G de Necker and J Gomes 1,146.481mpm, 4 VD Merwes 1,145.272mpm, 5 Andries Small 1,144.810mpm.
  • Yearling National results: 1 TNT Lofts 1,173.577mpm, 2 Andries Small 1,163.515mpm, 3 TNT Lofts 1,163.333mpm, 4 L and H de Jager 1,142.134mpm, 5 Jaco Faul 1,138.858mpm.
