Actonville achieve first win
Local cricket club's elite team gets first win under their belt.
With Actonville Spurs Cricket Club (ASCC) not playing on the opening weekend of the Eastern Premier League on October 5, due to the game falling over the Eid period, the team’s fixture against Duduza was played on Sunday, October 19, when the other teams in the league had a bye.
After suffering defeat to Springs Old Boys by a big margin the previous weekend, the Premier team were looking to pick up their first win of the campaign.
Duduza won the toss and decided to bat first, on a flat wicket.
The Actonville bowlers had done well by the first drinks break and had restricted the visiting team to 45/3.
Matthew Corrin (50), Mpho Nzimande (26) and Eastern’s semi-professional Dylan Stanley (33) made up the bulk of their 176 run total.
Xolile Nkomo, dubbed “Mr Reliable” at the club, picked up three wickets for 25 runs with the ball for Actonville while the club’s new signing Praveshan Chetty picked up figures of 3/42.
ASCC lost an early wicket when the run chase began, but Mathew Nielsen carried his off-season form into the match and batted through the innings with a score of 87 runs, while Actonville’s semi-professional Imraan Manack chipped in with 27 runs.
Tumelo Simande (2/15) was the away team’s best bowler.
Actonville chased down the score in 45.3 overs and ensured a six-wicket victory.
The team will be confident due to their win going into the Benoni cricket derby, away to local rivals Benoni Northerns, on Sunday, October 26.
The first delivery will be bowled at 9.30am.
- Meanwhile, on Saturday, October 18, the club’s Second League team lost by an agonising one run against Boksburg at home in a match where Ahmed Delair scored 127 for the hosts.
The club’s Third League side defeated Bakerton by five wickets, the Fourth League team lost to Boksburg and the Fifth League team lost to Duduza.
- In junior results, the club’s u-8, u-10 and u-12 teams all lost their matches to Avion Park, while the u-14 team had a walk-over win against Bakerton after they failed to arrive for the game.
