Wrestler could be Sportswoman of the Year
Former Kids Haven resident Mpho Madi is up for an SA Sports Award.
Commonwealth Games wrestling bronze medallist Mpho Madi has been nominated in the Sportswoman of the Year category of the annual SA Sports Awards, which will take place on November 30, at the Sandton Convention Centre.
Madi, who spent eight years of her life at Kids Haven, in Cranbourne Avenue, told the City Times that she was extremely excited to find herself nominated for the award.
She was nominated alongside javelin thrower Sunette Viljoen and road cyclist Ashleigh Moolman Pasio, who also won medals at the Games in Glasgow.
“I never expected to be nominated,” she said.
“There is strong competition among the nominees, as both Sunet and Ashleigh had a good year.
“I did not expect any wrestlers to be nominated, let alone me.
“I am really looking forward to the big night and feel confident that I will win this one.”
Her foster mother, Amanda van der Watt, said she hopes that Benoni residents are as proud of the young girl as she is.
