Disappointing defeat for local fighter

Local fighter is defeated at EFC 36.

It was supposed to be the night where local fighter Gareth Sawyer stretched his two fight winning streak to three, but it wasn’t to be as he suffered defeat at EFC 36, at the hands of the experienced Warren Allison.

Speaking to the City Times the morning after his middleweight bout, at the Coca Cola Dome, on Thursday, December 11, it was clear that Sawyer was disappointed with the way things panned out in the hexagon.

In contrast to his two previous professional fights, that were over in the first round, this fight went to the second round.

Sawyer over-committed on a punch and was caught with a right hook from Allison, who won via a knock-out, just 25 seconds into round two.

“I made a costly mistake,” he said.

“I kept my hands low and paid the price.

“I will have to learn from this defeat and come back stronger, fitter and more determined than ever.”

The former Benoni High School pupil congratulated his opponent on his win and said he won’t be making excuses for the loss.

“I am still new in this game and still have a lot to learn,” he added.

He will now enjoy some well-deserved time off with his family over the December holidays.
