Northerns let it slip at the death

It was never going to be easy for Benoni Northerns Football Club’s (BNFC) first XI when they headed to meet unbeaten Randburg for an ELFA Super League clash, on Saturday, June 4.

BNFC coach Jannie van den Berg could not field his strongest XI on the day and was missing the likes of in-form goalkeeper Colte Smit and captain Wade Marshall, through injury.

Despite this massive setback, the Northerns side that stepped out onto the field put up a valiant fight and just let it slip at the death, to lose 1-0 to top-of-the-table Randburg.

“The spine of our team was a bit cracked, but we pressed on and, considering the strength of Randburg, did well,” said van den Berg.

“We were so close to getting a deserved point, but a judgement error cost us and they clinched it at the end.”

The team will be aiming to bounce back on the road when they face Robertsham on Saturday, June 11.
