‘The best Bens performance I’ve ever seen’
Since their defeat in the Benoni football derby a fortnight back coach Raymond Cloete’s Old Bens first XI players have rediscovered their form and have hit their straps in a big way in the ELFA Super League.
After a 5-0 mauling of Boksburg at Currin Park the weekend prior, Cloete’s men made it 10 goals in two matches with a 5-2 away day victory over Corinthians in Edenvale on Saturday, June 4.
The coach told the City Times that Saturday’s performance was “the best football I have ever seen the Old Bens first team play”, particularly in the first half where they went 5-0 up within the first 35 minutes.
Striker Percy Visagie (with a hat trick), Ludick Malele (from the penalty spot) and Steven Webster were among the goal scorers in that five-goal first-half rampage.
“We totally dominated the game in that first 45 minutes,” said Cloete.
“In the second half we took our foot off the pedal as were just enjoying being 5-0 up.
“I also rang the changes and made sure that some of our fringe players got some game time,” Cloete added.
Bens would concede through a converted Corinthians penalty and a late strike.
“As things are going we are looking good going forward.
“We are still building this side and it must be remembered that we have only been back in this league for a year and a half.”
The team will be hoping to make it three consecutive league victories when they host Edenvale on Saturday, June 11.
• Meanwhile, the club’s reserve side went down 5-3 to Corinthians in the early kick-off on Saturday.
