Regatta goes on despite low wind
Weather had a major say on most of the sporting activities held in Benoni and in Ekurhuleni over the weekend.
One event which did go ahead was Benoni Sailing Club’s (BSC) annual open regatta, held on the waters of Homestead Dam on Saturday, February 25 and Sunday, February 26.
Des Geraghty, the club’s commodore, said: “The annual regatta was good fun, but could have been a lot better had there been a bit more wind.
“We only managed one race on the Saturday because of the rain and managed three races on the Sunday.”
Geraghty said there was a total of 36 entries overall, with Grant Caroline earning the plaudits as the senior winner and Keegan Nel finishing as the junior champion.
Asked about the future of sailing at BSC, Geragthy said: “We have been focusing on training new sailors through our school run by Peter Clayton and we have some good young, beginner and intermediate sailors coming through his school including previously disadvantaged youth.
“It’s a sport for anybody at any age and any size.
“There’s a boat for you.”
