History made as rugby debuts at Benoni Northerns

Saturday, May 27, was a momentous day for everybody involved with Benoni Northerns Sports Club.

Not only was the popular Benoni Football Derby taking place, but the new rugby sub-section also made its eagerly anticipated debut at Benoni Northerns Rugby Club on the club’s fields (John Barrable Hall side) at the same time.

Benoni Rugby Club, founded in 1910, now call Northern Areas their home after an agreement was reached earlier in the year between the two parties to become a sub-section of the overall club.

After erecting the poles on Friday, May 26, the stage was set for the first senior Valke Merlin League matches to be played at Northerns.

It was the club’s second XV which would ensure that the new rugby section started with a win when they faced Kempton Park’s Wolwe.

They emerged victorious by a score line of 17-15 in a highly competitive match.

The first XV could not match the achievement of the second side and found themselves on the wrong end of a 69-20 score line.

This follows heavy defeats to Sasolburg and Nigel in the weeks prior.

Despite the loss Benoni Northerns Rugby Club chairman Lourens Smit was delighted with their new home.

“Everything went well,” he told the City Times.

“We had lots of spectators there and the new poles look great where they are.

“All in all we really enjoyed playing at our new home grounds and we had one hell of a party across the road in the main clubhouse after the matches.”

The club will host their second round of league matches against Sasolburg at Northerns this Saturday (June 3).

The second XV will kick off proceedings at 2pm followed by the first team kick-off at 3.30pm.
