Smaller cricket nations battle it out in Benoni

Benoni continues to play a role in the growth of world cricket.

On Sunday, September 3 the first deliveries of the 2017 International Cricket Council (ICC) World Cricket League Division Five tournament were bowled at Sahara Park Willowmoore.

The Benoni facility is hosting lesser-known cricketing nations until Saturday, September 9.

The teams are placed into two groups of four sides.

Guernsey, Cayman Islands, Italy and Qatar are in Group A, and Germany, Ghana, Jersey and Vanuatu are in Group B.

The top two teams in each group will progress to the semi-finals, while the other two teams will compete for placings.

The top two teams will qualify for the World Cricket League Division Four tournament, scheduled to take place in the middle of 2018, and five of the teams will be relegated to regional divisions.

Cassim Suliman, CEO of the Eastern Cricket Union, said: “It is absolutely brilliant to host a World Cricket League tournament for the first time.

“We are proud to stage this international event and play our part in growing world cricket.

“The ICC’s head of security was here and was impressed with our set-up and the safety measures we have implemented for the tournament.

“The whole operation has been good and the tournament is moving along quite well.”

Results from Day One of the tournament were:

• Group A: Qatar (343/7 in 50 overs) beat Cayman Islands (250/8 in 50 overs) by 93 runs on the main oval. Italy (277/7 in 50 overs) beat Guernsey (229/8 in 50 overs) by 48 runs on Willowmoore A.

• Group B: Vanuatu (170 in 48 overs) lost to Jersey (174/4 in 34.2 overs) by six wickets on Willowmoore B. Ghana (158 in 42 overs) lost to Germany (159/9 in 39.5 overs) by one wicket on Willowmoore C.
