Qualified to scare

If you thought that the large, furry, blue and the green bubblegum-shaped monsters from the Pixar animation, Monsters Inc. were the friends they are from the very start, you need to go for a history lesson with its prequel, Monsters University.

The film takes you back to Mike (Billy Crystal) and Sulley’s (John Goodman) college days at Monster University, where the two meet as freshman.

The plot tells the story of how the monsters have to re-secure their welcome at the university, after their pride, competitive natures and inability to tolerate one another get in the way of them reaching success within the planned curriculum.

Throughout the rocky journey to save their reputations, the humorously stubborn two monsters learn that their contradicting talents put together actually make them the ultimate scare team.

Stereotypical college moments are portrayed throughout the film.

The movie is funny, witty and heart-warming, with hidden revelations and hints relating to the first movie.

I particularly enjoyed the realistic and refreshing conclusion, which revealed how the duo eventually reached their fame as professional “scarers”.

The legendary characters portray the same personalities that had them crawling deep into my heart during Monsters Inc. and had me wanting to watch it again after this movie.

I recommend this film to all the animation-lovers out there, especially families with young children, as I experienced a constant flow of child laughter in the cinema.

Monsters University is currently showing at Ster Kinekor in the Northmead Square. TB
